Since the late 1800s, sugarcane has been a vital crop providing income for over one million rural people, primarily in KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga. While around 1,000 commercial growers supply the industry’s 12 mills, more than 19,000 small-scale growers – often women-led households in deep rural areas – rely on their harvest to fund essential needs like school fees, books, and uniforms.
